2025年7月5日は禅寺の掃除でPERFECT DAY
6月に早くも梅雨が明け、連日、強い日差しが続いています。
そんな中、7月5日の早朝5時半から、和歌山市鷹匠町にあるお寺・珊瑚寺にて、本堂の拭き掃除を行いました。
7月5日といえば、「日本に大災難が来る」といった予言がSNSなどで広まり、メディアでも話題となり、緊張感が高まっていた日でもありました。
しかし、当日は驚くほど静かで穏やかな朝を迎えることができました。
むしろ、そうした日に禅寺の掃除を行うことには、どこか趣（おもむき）深いものがありました。
ちなみに、珊瑚寺のご住職は、禅の総本山・永平寺にて7年間の修行を積まれた方で、現在も日々掃除に励まれています。
おかげで、見た目にはすでに美しいのですが、やはりお一人では手の届きにくい場所もあり、夏の法要の準備もかねて、私たちが掃除のお手伝いに伺いました。
朝早くにもかかわらず、上は80代から、下は小学生まで、見えない場所までしっかりと掃除を行い、堂内は一層清らかになりました。

なお、珊瑚寺さんではこの本堂にて毎月概ね第1土曜日に早朝坐禅会を開催されています。

The rainy season ended unusually early in June this year, and the days have been filled with intense sunlight ever since.
On the morning of July 5th at 5:30 a.m., we gathered at Sango-ji Temple in Takajocho, Wakayama City, to clean the main hall.
Incidentally, July 5th was a day that had stirred some anxiety, with rumors circulating online about possible disasters hitting Japan. The media echoed those concerns, raising public tension. However, the morning turned out to be calm and peaceful—perhaps the perfect day to quietly clean a Zen temple. There was something poetic about it.
The head priest of Sango-ji trained for seven years at Eiheiji, the head temple of the Soto Zen tradition, before taking up his current post.
Thanks to his daily efforts, the temple already appeared spotless at first glance. Still, there are always hidden corners that are difficult for one person to manage alone. In preparation for the upcoming summer memorial service, we offered our help with the cleaning.
Despite the early hour, participants ranged from children to elders in their 80s, working together to polish even the unseen places. The result was a beautifully refreshed temple space.
